Twenty years. No label. No shortcuts.

He grew up in West Dallas and pressed his first record, Exotic Games, at fifteen. There was no infrastructure behind it. He moved it himself, and that set the pattern for everything that followed.

He joined Mr. Pookie's Stoney Crook Clique and put himself inside the lineage of North Texas street rap. Then came Eat Greedy — sixteen volumes of it, plus more than thirty albums, built on a laid-back cadence and the kind of street reporting that made people say he was telling their story back to them. More than 500,000 units moved without a major label ever writing a check.

In 2011, Triple D Anthem with Dorrough Music and Bay Bay gave the city a flag to put up. Along the way the features stacked: Lil' Keke, Slim Thug, Bobby V, Jim Jones, Chamillionaire, Yo Gotti, Rick Ross, Nate Dogg. In early 2011 the internet had him signed to Cash Money. He answered it with a record called Already Cash Money and kept going independent.

By 2016 he was recording as Don Chief. The Return of Chief Lucas charted on Billboard's rap chart. The name changed because the man had; the work never stopped.

Now there is a new run. Nights Like This, Mind Games and Feeling Good came out of sessions with the producers who helped build the sound in the first place, Brian Keith among them, sharper now than it was then. Videos are already shot. New Dallas keeps calling him back to the table to explain how the city got here, and he keeps showing up with something new to play.
